Two young visitors from Mexico who smuggled fish maws of the endangered totoaba into Hong Kong were jailed for 14 weeks and 10 weeks respectively at the West Kowloon Magistrates’ Courts today.
The totoaba is illegally caught for its swim bladders, which are in demand in Hong Kong and China. It is also known as “aquatic cocaine.”
The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department said two males aged 32 and 30 arrived in Hong Kong from Hermosillo, Mexico via Monterrey, Mexico and Seoul, South Korea. Customs officers found about 17 and 11 kilograms of totoaba fish maw in their two check-in suitcases.
Totoaba is listed in Appendix I to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora.
