Vietnam Has The Opportunity To Join The Global Banana Market

(MARD – 28/03/2014) Vietnam is a tropical country and also home of many precious banana plants. Banana plants are cultivated in large area with high yield. Area under banana cultivation accounts for 19 % of the Vietnam’s total fruit plant area with annual output of about 1.4 million tons.
However, banana plantation is not planned in a specific area. Moreover, because of limited carefulness in transportation and preservation methods, the fruit appearance are impossible to be kept fine .
Currently, Japan needs to import around 10-20 tonnes of laba banana a day, but Vietnam can not produce enough laba banana to meet the demand. In addition to Japan, the UK, Russia, Ukraine… also favored laba banana, a specialty fruit of Lam Dong province.
The area for laba banana cultivation has been shrinking sharply to only around 200ha in Lam Dong as farmers are shifting to other crops due to fluctuation of banana prices.
Vietnam’s export value of bananas to China, Singapore, the Republic of Korea and many Eastern European countries, was reported to have increased significantly for the past few months. Farm gate prices of banana rose by more than 20 %, but no sufficient bananas are for exports. Currently, China needs to purchase around 20-30 tons per day, and Japan asks for 15-20 tons, but Vietnam cannot meet their demand.
In the near future, Vietnam should have appropriate policies and measures to meet the regional markets’ demands, which enables Vietnamese bananas to reach the world markets.
