In 2025, Vietnam coconut exports surpassed dragon fruit for the first time. As a result, coconuts rose to second place with export turnover of approximately USD 534 million, up nearly 37% compared with 2024.
Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable exports posted impressive growth in 2025, reaching USD 8.56 billion. This represented an increase of 19.8% year on year. Vietnamese durian led the sector with export value of around USD 3.86 billion. In particular, it accounted for more than 45% of total fruit and vegetable export turnover.
Notably, coconut overtook dragon fruit to become the second-largest export fruit. Its export value reached nearly USD 534 million, up almost 37% from 2024.
Dragon fruit ranked third with export turnover of over USD 525 million, down 1.5% compared with 2024. It was followed by pistachios at more than USD 466 million, up 72.3%. Vietnamese mangoes reached USD 409 million, up 10.4%. Meanwhile, bananas totaled USD 405 million, up 6.6%, among other products.

According to the Import–Export Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the signing of the protocol for Vietnam coconut exports to China provided a major boost to the product. This development played a key role in driving growth over the past year.
Despite facing intense competition, dragon fruit exports have remained among the leading categories. This has been supported by a shift toward markets such as India and the Middle East. Other fruits, including mangoes, pomelos, passion fruit and longan, also recorded steady growth. In particular, passion fruit accounted for a significant share of around 25% of Vietnam’s fruit export structure to the EU market.
At present, China remains Vietnam’s largest market for Vietnam coconut exports, with turnover exceeding USD 5.5 billion. This growth has been supported by the signing of additional export protocols for frozen durian and fresh coconuts. In addition, efforts to shift from informal cross-border trade to official export channels have helped stabilize order values.
The Import–Export Department noted that Vietnam’s fruit and vegetable export structure in 2025 reflects a gradual reduction in dependence on the Chinese market. At the same time, Vietnamese fruit and vegetable companies have seen increasing success in building brand recognition in countries with high technical standards.

Notably, processed fruit and vegetable products have expanded to account for more than 30% of total export value. This shift has contributed to higher overall export earnings.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Vietnam currently has approximately 200,000 hectares of coconut plantations. These plantations produce around 2 million tonnes annually. About one-third of this area meets organic standards recognized by the United States and Europe. The plantations are available mainly in the central region and the Mekong Delta.
In Ben Tre—formerly a separate province and now part of Vinh Long Province—coconut cultivation covers more than 80,000 hectares. This is the largest coconut-growing area nationwide. Coconut farming is also the primary livelihood for over 70% of the local population.
