Jackfruit may help in diabetes and weight loss

Jackfruit is widely found in areas with a tropical climate and can be consumed on a weight loss and diabetic diet. Here are the benefits fo jackfruit and how to consume the fruit.

Jackfruit, also called Kathal in Hindi, is the fruit of the Jack tree. Though the native location of the tree is not known, it is found in countries that have a tropical climate, like most countries in Asia. It grows the most in the Western Ghats of southern India in the subcontinent. Popular as ‘vegan meat’ in the West, who have now discovered the many benefits of the fruit, it is being sold in supermarkets in the US in slices, and Asians, who have been consuming the fruit for ages are divided as to how it should be made – with the bulbs or without the bulbs.

However, one thing that everyone unanimously agrees to is the fact that jackfruit is very healthy, and should be made a regular part of everyone’s diet. Millions of people in the country suffer from diabetes, and related diseases or conditions. They must use abundantly available jackfruit to treat and manage these conditions.

Jackfruit for diabetics

Jackfruit is very fibrous – and that is extremely helpful for people with diabetes. Fibre slows down the rate at which sugar is released in the blood, therefore keeping your blood sugar controlled. It is also rich in various vitamins and minerals like vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, potassium, iron, magnesium, etc. When you are on a weight loss or diabetic diet, you tend to follow a very restrictive diet, that may lead to a deficiency of certain nutrients in the body, and the diet may, in fact, turn out to be unhealthy for you. Therefore, it is very important to include foods like jackfruit in your diet, which help maintain the balance by managing diabetes, as well as providing the body with the essential nutrients.

Jackfruit also has a low glycemic index, which is attributed to its high fibre content. People with diabetes should include foods with low GI in their diet, as it means that they spike blood sugar lesser than foods that have a relatively higher GI. A study also found that people who consumed jackfruit had improved blood sugar levels.

This fruit also contains antioxidants, which not only make it a great diet food for diabetes, but also for detox and weight loss.

Jackfruit for weight loss

Jackfruit can help in weight loss if consumed the right way. This fruit is high fibre, which helps improve digestion and metabolism – the fundamentals of weight loss. It is not very high in calories, one cup of sliced jackfruit contains about 155 calories. Jackfruit is not exactly fit for keto, which is a very popular weight loss diet  – as it is not very low in carbs – one cup of jackfruits contains about 40 g of carbs. However, it does have other benefits for weight loss that cannot be ignored.
